Homeroom Berkeley Food Review
My sister and I decided to do take-out at Homeroom in Berkeley. We’ve been up and running all day so we decided not to cook. When I google food spots, I usually click top-rated and open now to narrow down my search. Homeroom has a rating of 4.6 out of 5. And 87 reviews. Once I througly read the positive reviews, I decided to give the food a try.
I checked the menu on their website. Their speaciality: mac n chesse. I loved that Homeroom had a variety of flavors. They even had a seasonal special; Chicken Pot Pie and Macximus Mac. Kogi Short Rib Mac, Buffalo Chicken Mac, and Gilroy Garlic Mac caught my attention. I decided to skip the meat and choose the garlic mac since I ate a bacon and egg english muffin in the morning. However, the only con with that it was an additional charge of 97 cents to add bread crumbs with my $12.99 mac. Homeroom also had a lot of varieties of sides and salads as well. To balance out the meal, I decided to get the Vegan Brussel Sprouts $6.49 and Baby Kale Salad $9.99.
I tried to order oline, but their system wasn’t working. So I called and the one of the workers answered fairly quickly. I told them my order and they said it shall be ready in about fifteen minutes. Driving there wasn’t bad despite the storm and the evening traffic. Once I got there, my order was ready. Overall, the place and kitchen appeared clean. But no customers was there. It was Monday and the rain kept pouring down on us. The workers were nice and my food was secured in a big paper bag. I paid and left. The mac n cheese was cold when I arrived back home so I put it in the microwave to heat it up a bit.
The mac n cheese was delicious. The gouda and pecorino blended well together. And I glad I added the bread crumbs. It tasted better. The garlic gave the mac n cheese a nice balance flavor. It was perfect.
I’m glad I picked the brussel sprouts. The cook put the right amount of maple balsamic glaze. And they didn’t overly roast the brussel sprouts. They tasted great with nice blend of sweetness and acid.
Even though this was a pick-up order, the kale sald could’ve been presented better. Some kale was wilted with some of the leaves yellow. And I should had said no feta and garlic breadcrumbs since I was already eating cheese and crumbs with my mac. Overall, the salad was good and I really like the citrus vinagrette. And the cook was generous with cherry tomatoes, peas, and sunflower seeds.
The food was worth the price. I definitely go back and try something different. Probably the Kogi Short Rib Mac. I’ll also recommend this spot to someone.
